Picking up where the last installment left off, the
heated trial go-kart race between Keiichi and Sora Hasegawa
has just begun. Exchanging a brief glance with Belldandy
as he zooms by, Keiichi quickly takes the lead with
Sora tailing him all the way. As she watches his racing
performance, Hasegawa begins to notice that Keiichi
is feeling the movements of his vehicle, and then making
his own movements. Seeing this makes her understand
what Belldandy meant earlier by "talking to your
vehicle" - you must adapt your performance to the
machine you're using. With this knowledge in mind, Sora
is able to take better control of her go-kart, and the
distance between the two racers is quickly beginning
to diminish as she closes in on Keiichi's lead. She
is eventually able to catch up with her competitor,
who gives her a congratulatory thumbs up as he races
off to return to work.
After
Keiichi is gone, and Sora has stopped her vehicle, the
Auto Club members come running up to her in astonishment
that she was able to perform so well. Hasegawa instantly
goes running to Belldandy, stating that she finally
understands what it takes to win. Hearing the praises
of her fellow Club members fills her head with a pride
that she has rarely felt, and begins to think that maybe
she has a chance to win, and is excited to give the
go-kart another try. Belldandy, however, knows in her
heart that Keiichi was holding back during the race,
and silently worries that Sora might be getting too
confident in her own abilities. She casts her doubts
aside, however, and sets the Auto Club to work on a
new project.
Moments
later, we find the Club members hard at work on constructing
a wooden ramp-like object tied into the upcoming race
that is part of the Goddess' plan. Sora is helping in
the project also, stating that she feels the need to
help, even though the others say she should concentrate
solely on winning the race. As she hammers away at the
project, the head of her hammer goes flying literally
off the handle, landing uncomfortably close to one of
the Club members. Seeing this near accident instantly
kills Sora's newfound confidence, instantly sending
her into "doom and gloom" mode. As the Club
members watch her sulk, one of them questions why they're
going through all this trouble, and just let Sora be
the Director. It's also hinted that one of the members
might be secretly attracted to her, which the other
guys waste no time in ridiculing him over.
While
the Club members toil on the carpentry project, Belldandy
approaches Sora, and suggests that she continue with
her training for the upcoming race. Hasegawa does not
find it fair that she be excused from the work that
the other members are doing, just because of the race,
but the Goddess reminds her that it is Sora's duty to
train right now, and being a part of the team in her
own special way. Sora eventually agrees, and continues
to work on preparing for the event ahead.
That
night, we find Keiichi driving his go-kart around the
outside of his house, while Belldandy watches him from
outside the front door of the home. He has a small light
strapped around his head to help him see better in the
dark, but it is of little help to him. Just then, he
is surrounded by tiny balls of light that fill the dark
sky, illuminating the area around him. They are coming
from Belldandy, who has seated herself on a rock nearby,
and is offering her own assistance. She states that
it is for his help earlier that afternoon with the practice
race he held for Sora during his lunch break. Skuld
is watching this quiet moment between the two from nearby,
and can't quite understand her sister's behavior when
she is alone with Keiichi. Unknown to any of them, Urd
is hard at work in her bedroom on a new potion, laughing
to herself. It seems she has big plans for the upcoming
race as well...
The
scene switches to the next morning, and it is finally
time for the "battle" that will determine
who will be the director of the Auto Club. All of the
members are gathered, including Chihiro, who will be
overseeing everything. While everything is being set
up, Keiichi notices the large, wooden ramp-like object
that Belldandy had set the Club members to make the
day before, and can only wonder what it's for. Returning
his attention to the situation at hand, Chihiro designates
the starting point, and names the campus parking lot
as the finish line. The only rule is that the two racers
must pass all 3 checkpoints that she has set up, and
they can take any route they want between them. Sora
is overjoyed to hear this, since as we discovered back
in Chapter 120, she knows all the ins and outs and shortcuts
about Nekomi Tech.
Keiichi
and Sora take their positions behind the wheel of their
individual vehicles as Chihiro prepares to start the
race with the flip of a coin. Right before the race
begins, Belldandy approaches Hasegawa, and whispers
something in her ear, though we do not get to hear what
it is. Chihiro's coin hits the pavement, and the two
drivers instantly speed off as the long-awaited event
that will determine the future of the Auto Club is finally
set into motion.
