Volume 14 Chapter 81 - Call Me Queen!

Start of the QUEEN SAYOKO Arc

Sayoko is standing on her balcony, gazing into the star-filled sky, wishing to the heavens that she can be the Campus Queen once again. (A contest held at the Nekomi Tech campus to determine the most popular girl at the school. It is a title Sayoko held until Belldandy stole it from her the previous year.) Unknown to Sayoko, the Demon, Mara, is listening, and decides she can use her and her wish to get what she wants.

The next day, Sayoko is looking at an advertisement for the Campus Queen contest that has a picture of Belldandy on it. Sayoko deduces that Belldandy has mysterious powers, and used them so she could win the contest last year. She silently wishes that she too had the same power. Just then, a mysterious figure in a cloak and hood (Mara) appears behind Sayoko. She has heard her wish, and offers to grant it if Sayoko will cooperate with her. With all of her might, Sayoko wishes that she had power, and could be the Queen of Nekomi Tech.

At that same moment, Belldandy (who is riding in the sidecar on Keiichi’s motorcycle) feels a powerful magic force from somewhere nearby. Wanting to investigate, Belldandy teleports through the rear view bike mirror to the Nekomi Tech campus, where she felt the energy originate. When she arrives, she finds Urd and Skuld already there. It seems they felt the magical energy vibe as well. They are shocked to discover that Nekomi Tech no longer stands before them. In its place is a huge fairy tale-like castle. The Goddesses suspect that Mara is somehow involved, but cannot understand what her motivation would be. Skuld begins to approach the castle, but as she draws near, she is suddenly overcome by a Mind-Force Field, an invisible magical barrier that surrounds the castle and brainwashes anyone who comes near the building. Under the control of the Field, Skuld begins to ramble on about a “Queen”, and how she lives only to serve her. Belldandy and Urd pull Skuld away from the castle, instantly breaking the spell, and returning her to normal.

Just then, Keiichi finally arrives, wondering why Belldandy left so suddenly earlier while they were driving. When she points at the castle before them, Keiichi begins to approach it, and just like Skuld before him, is overtaken by the Mind-Force Field. In his hypnotic state, Keiichi mentions a “Queen Sayoko”. Belldandy and Urd are shocked to hear this, and even more shocked that Sayoko has pulled off this feat.

Inside the castle, Sayoko sits upon her throne before the entire student body and faculty of Nekomi Tech, who are now her willing servants because of the invisible Mind-Force Field. As Sayoko basks in her own personal glory, soaking up the praises from her loyal subjects, Mara approaches her from behind, and whispers in her ear that intruders are approaching the castle (Keiichi and the Goddesses). Sayoko orders her many followers to punish those who do not obey her, and stop the intruders.

Meanwhile, back outside, Keiichi and the Goddesses are now wearing ribbons on their heads. They are special ribbons that Skuld built that can block the mind control powers of the magic surrounding the castle, so they can enter the building without falling victim to the spell. When they begin to approach the entrance of the castle, Keiichi sees Tamiya and Otaki waiting for them. He can’t tell if they are under Sayoko and Mara’s control or not, but he quickly gets his answer when they accuse him of not pledging loyalty to Queen Sayoko, and rush at him to attack. As Keiichi is overwhelmed by their double team attack, Urd prepares to summon a lightning spell to help him. Before she can, however, Belldandy races forward and summons Holy Bell to perform an attack spell – the Holy Wind Press.

The magical attack knocks out Tamiya and Otaki instantly, while Skuld is shocked to see Belldandy use an attack spell, as her sister very rarely uses them. Urd approaches Belldandy, and suggests she stay behind, since she knows how much her loving sister cares for everyone, and she may have to use her attack magic again on people under Sayoko’s control. She wonders if Belldandy can handle hurting the people she cares about. Belldandy, however, is determined not to allow this Demonic magic to continue on Earth, and that she is willing to shoulder the guilt that will result from her actions. Keiichi and the Goddesses vow to put a stop to this together, while Sayoko waits within.

The Queen Sayoko arc (v14c081 to v15c085) focuses once again on the recurrent theme of Sayoko's jealousy towards Belldandy. As with several earlier chapters, Mara reappears again to help Sayoko not out of charity but for her own gain. The arc marks what is probably Sayoko's most serious bout of jealousy as well as one of Mara's most determined efforts to break the relationship of Belldandy and Keiichi.
