Volume 14 Chapter 79 - Pretty in Scarlet

Belldandy is standing before a withered tree. She summons Holy Bell, and together, Goddess and angel join together in unison to sing to the tree a song of healing, so that it may grow healthy once more. Skuld is watching this from nearby, and is envious of her sister for having an angel. (Skuld is still too young to have one.) The young Goddess wonders to herself if Urd has an angel, and decides to go ask.

When she arrives in Urd’s room, however, her older sister is not there. What Skuld does find, however, is an Angel’s Egg placed upon a small pedestal. Seeing this causes Skuld to dream if it was her Angel Egg, what would her angel turn out to be like? Just then, she notices a sign that Urd has placed underneath the small Egg, stating that Skuld is to keep away from it. In mocking defiance, Skuld holds the egg over her open mouth like she’s going to eat it. Just then, Urd enters the room, startling the young Goddess. Skuld is so startled that she lets go of the Angel’s Egg, and accidentally drops it into her mouth…

Urd instantly tries to search for a potion that can make Skuld cough up the Egg before it hatches inside her. Scared, Skuld goes running out of the room, heading for Belldandy for help. Before she can explain what’s happened, however, Skuld suddenly feels faint, and falls into unconsciousness. It seems that the Angel’s Egg has already hatched within her. The unconscious Skuld is taken to Belldandy’s room, where the two Goddess sisters contemplate what to do with her. Given Skuld’s limited power, there’s a chance that her angel will run out of control, since Skuld will be unable to control it. They consider sealing the angel away before it can materialize from Skuld’s body, but before they can even try that, a strange bump appears on Skuld’s bare back. The angel is beginning to form. Belldandy and Urd ready their spells, prepared for the worst. But instead, the creature that materializes from Skuld is a tiny, harmless, child-like angel named Noble Scarlet.

Later that day, Keiichi comes home to find Skuld (who is now awake and perfectly fine) proudly showing off her new angel to everyone. Keiichi asks what kind of powers Noble Scarlet has, but because it’s so small and Skuld’s power is so limited, the little angel is not capable of much. Belldandy figures this is for the best, since it will be easy for Skuld to control this way. The days pass, and Skuld grows quite attached to Noble Scarlet. We see the angel try to make up for its lack of power by helping out around the house (carrying laundry, helping Keiichi fix his broken portable CD player). The young Goddess and angel are even able to share moments alone, such as enjoying ice cream, and reading romance mangas together. But then, one day, a visitor arrives…

That visitor is Sentaro, the young boy whom Skuld has a crush on (though she’ll never admit it), who was introduced in Chapter 74. Skuld orders Noble Scarlet to disappear, and goes to meet with him. It seems that Sentaro has brought a small necklace as a gift for Skuld from a trip he recently took. He has also come to tell her he will be participating in a BMX bike race next week, and wants her to attend. As they sit together alone, Skuld thinks back on the romance manga she was previously reading, and begins to think about what it’d be like if Sentaro and her were like the people she read about. Little Noble Scarlet (who has hidden herself behind Skuld’s back) somehow knows what Skuld is thinking, and pushes the young Goddess in the back, causing Skuld to stumble forward toward a very startled Sentaro, their lips almost meeting. Both are embarrassed by this awkward moment, and young Sentaro runs off. Skuld tries to stop him, but he is already gone on his bike before she can apologize.

Later that day, a very angry Skuld is taking out her frustrations on poor Noble Scarlet, since she knows that her angel was responsible for her embarrassment earlier. She accuses the little angel of ruining her relationship with Sentaro, and screams out in anger that she hates her. Rejected and heartbroken, Noble Scarlet goes to talk to Belldandy. The Goddess understands that the angel only wanted to help Skuld, and suggests that Noble Scarlet should try to make up with her. A little while later, we see Noble Scarlet entering Skuld’s bedroom with a carton of ice cream as a peace offering. Skuld states that she is not angry at her angel anymore, but warns her that if she ever does something like that again, she will have to go back inside her Angel Egg. Noble Scarlet happily agrees.

The next week, it is the day of the BMX bike race. Sentaro has taken the lead, and is impressing the crowd. Skuld watches him from the audience, silently cheering him on. But then, young Sentaro loses control of his bike, causing him to crash. As he begins to stand up, he sees Skuld watching in the crowd. Seeing her gives him inspiration to quickly get back up, and keep going. He quickly regains the lead, and is eventually named the winner.

During the victory ceremony, Sentaro is looking for Skuld, but she is too nervous to show herself to him, certain that he is upset about the incident that took place the week before. Little Noble Scarlet decides she must go against the Goddess’ previous orders, and step in. She once again gives Skuld a helpful push on the back, causing the young Goddess to go stumbling forward out of the crowd toward Sentaro. As she congratulates Sentaro on his victory, Skuld thinks to herself that she will forgive her angel for disobeying her…this time.

When Skuld returns home, she calls for Noble Scarlet, but the angel does not appear. Belldandy and Urd approach her, and must break the news that Noble Scarlet has gone back inside her Egg, just like Skuld had said she should do if she would ever interfere with her relationship with Sentaro again. After all, an angel obeys the words of its master completely. Skuld is saddened by this, not realizing that Noble Scarlet would really do something like this. However, Belldandy reminds her that she will see her angel again when she has obtained enough power and the time is right. Skuld attaches the Angel’s Egg to a small chain that she wears around her neck, right below the necklace that Sentaro had given her. It is a constant reminder of the friend she once had, and will someday have again…

As its name implies, this chapter marks the first appearance of Noble Scarlet. This chapter is particularly informative about angels in that it confirms that angels are truly sentient beings possessing a will of their own. This concept is not seen very clearly in the other goddesses because they possess enough power to fully control their angels. In such case, the goddess-angel pair is for all purposes a unit rather than separate entities.
