Volume 13 Chapter 76 - Hail to the Chief

Start of the HAIL TO THE CHIEF Arc

Tamiya and Otaki are meeting in private. They both seem very nervous about the arrival of a woman from their past. That woman turns out to be Chihiro Fujimi, the original founder and director of the Nekomi Tech Motor Club. She arrives at the old clubhouse, only to see a sign stating that the Club has moved to a different location. Angered by this, she barges into the new clubhouse, demanding answers. This is a great shock to Keiichi, Belldandy, and Hasegawa, who are inside working on a mini motorcycle engine, and have never seen her before. They become even more confused when this strange woman sees the bike they’re working on, and begins rambling on about their design, thinking it’s a radio control toy, because of its small size.

Keiichi tries to explain that they plan to race this small bike in an upcoming race to test the true power of the smallest feasible bike engine just for the fun of seeing what would happen, but Chihiro just laughs at the notion, and how simple the logic of “because it’s fun” seems. She quickly apologizes, however, stating that she once knew someone who told her almost the exact same thing. Now interested, she asks who Keiichi is, and what he does in the Club. When Chihiro finds out that he’s the current Director of the group, she asks him if he will race her using that small bike when it is completed as a “test”.

She sets the race for two days from now, but a naturally confused Keiichi (who still doesn’t know who this woman is) asks why she wants to test him. Chihiro finally introduces herself as the past Motor Club Director and founder, who took a fledgling “Auto Fan Club”, and turned it into the Nekomi Tech Motor Club they know today. She is now a professional biker for a racing team. Keiichi is excited at the notion of racing against the Club’s founder, and agrees, thinking that this may be a test to see if he is capable of leading the group.

When Chihiro prepares to leave on her own bike, she calls out to Tamiya and Otaki, who are hiding in the bushes nearby in fear, still nervous of her presence. She praises them on the people they have found to carry on the Club, but tells them they’re still not off the hook for moving the clubhouse location without her permission…

Two days later, the race between Chihiro and Keiichi, both riding on the Club’s miniature bikes, commences. As the two racers make their way through the campus, Keiichi is in awe at how quickly his competitor pulls ahead of him. Keiichi seems to be having trouble taking corners on this small bike, but emotional support from Belldandy (who keeps on popping up at various points of the race to cheer him on) keeps him going, and leaves a confused Chihiro wondering how Belldandy can keep on popping up in places before they even get there.

The competition continues, and Keiichi is having trouble keeping up. He thinks he sees his chance when he sees Chihiro’s mini bike has broken down, and is at the side of the road. However, she quickly fixes this situation by pulling out a spare mini engine, and is back in the race in no time. They are now approaching the end of the race, and Keiichi decides to give it his all, finally pulling ahead of Chihiro. However, he has made an error on the amount of time he held his foot down on the brake, which slows him down. This allows Chihiro to pull ahead once more, and claim the victory.

The race over, Chihiro congratulates her opponent on his performance. Seeing Keiichi and his love of racing makes her think back to when she was a student, working on bikes in her spare time. When the other girls would ask why she wastes her time, she would simply respond, “because it’s fun”, just like Keiichi told her when they first met. When Keiichi asks if he failed the test because he lost the race, Chihiro just laughs, stating that the “test” was for her. She has decided to officially quit the racing team she is currently working for, and start a business where she can build her own custom-made dream bikes, so she can feel the fun of building bikes once again. It seems that the two have much in common, as that has always been Keiichi’s dream as well. It seems as though Chihiro will play a large part in Keiichi’s future plans…

The Hail to the Chief arc (v13c076 to v14c078) marks the debut of Chihiro Fujimi, the first chief of the NIT Motor Club. Unlike most other AMG arcs, the three chapters are actually independent stories, related only by the fact that Chihiro plays a prominent role in them.
