Volume 13 Chapter 74 - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Now that Skuld has made the first step toward independence by learning how to ride a bike, the time has come for her to begin focusing on developing her magical ability that lies within her. Skuld is trying to focus all her power so that she can levitate a small metal nut off the ground, but she is not having much luck. Skuld is beginning to lose her confidence, but Belldandy reminds her of the bicycle experience, and how she ultimately overcame that obstacle, so if she keeps on trying, she will eventually be able to call upon her magic.

Just as Skuld is about to try again, the young boy from the previous Chapter (whom we learn is named Sentaro), enters. He has come to show Skuld a new bike trick he learned. He performs the trick, much to the amazement of all three Goddesses. When Belldandy asks where he learned it, Sentaro simply replies that he loves learning new skills with his bike.

Hearing the word “love” seems to trigger something within Skuld, like a switch within her heart. However, Skuld decides she does not have time for such silly thoughts, and needs to concentrate on levitating the small metal nut she is hiding in her hands behind her back. (She does not want Sentaro to see what she’s trying to do, as she does not want him to know she’s a Goddess.) At that moment, Sentaro approaches her, commenting that her face is all red. Skuld, instantly nervous at being so close to Sentaro, immediately backs off. However, she suddenly realizes that the nut is no longer in her hand behind her back. Rather, it is floating in the air above it. Skuld has finally mastered the magic of levitation, and leaps for joy, leaving a confused Sentaro wondering what she’s so happy about…

That night, Skuld is showing off her new ability to Keiichi, making a metal screw float in the air. As Belldandy watches her sister, she reminds her that a Goddess’ power is the power of love for others. As Skuld feels more love, her power will grow. Could Sentaro be the source of this power? Over the next couple days, Sentaro and the young Goddess seem to grow closer, and each day, Skuld’s power grows. Belldandy can only watch the budding relationship with growing interest, and hope that Skuld never forgets the feeling she currently is experiencing.

One day, while Sentaro is performing some bike tricks for Skuld, he has a minor accident, which causes him to fall and hurt himself. Skuld orders the boy to go see Belldandy and get the scratch on his forehead looked at. As soon as he is gone, Skuld stands before Sentaro’s bike lying on the ground. She notices how scratched up the bike is from Sentaro’s various other wipe outs like the one he just had, and wishes she could help give him a beautiful new bike to ride. This triggers the power within the young Goddess, and she summons her magic to repair the bike as if it were new. Moments later, Sentaro returns, after having visited Belldandy, and gotten a small bandage placed on his forehead. Skuld is anxious to show her friend the repaired bike, but his reaction is not what she expected. Sentaro is upset by the sight of it, and asks why Skuld would do such a thing. The Goddess is naturally confused, as she only wanted to help, and show her affection for him.

Later that day, Skuld is performing another exercise to strengthen her magical ability, this one concerning magically stacking dice on top of each other, and lining up the numbers. Although Keiichi and Belldandy are there for support, she is having a hard time concentrating, as Skuld is thinking about the incident with Sentaro. She is still confused over why he got so mad at her for fixing his bike. Keiichi reminds Skuld that the scratches on a bike are almost constant reminders of memories you’ve built with it, but Skuld does not exactly buy his theory. A little while later, Skuld goes outside to sulk, only to be joined by Belldandy. Her sister’s gentle words make Skuld realize the mistake she made, and how she accidentally wound up hurting him when she only wanted to help. Realizing this, Skuld heads off to find Sentaro and apologize.

Elsewhere, we find Sentaro riding down the streets alone on his bike. He tries to perform a tricky jump, but it goes wrong in mid-air, which causes him to lose control of the bike, and send him hurtling down to a potentially dangerous fall. Fortunately, Skuld happens to arrive just in time. When she sees Sentaro in danger, she summons all the power within her to stop her friend from falling, and send him floating gently and safely down to the ground. Skuld runs over to him, and with Belldandy’s words fresh in her mind, apologizes for repairing his bike without his permission, as she had no idea how important all the scratches on it were, and how they were tied into important memories. Sentaro explains that only one scratch mattered, but he will not reveal the reason to her. What Skuld does not realize is that the one scratch on the bike that mattered the most to Sentaro was the one it received when he wiped out the day he first met Skuld…
