  Volume 12 Chapter 71 - A Goddess Never Forgets

Belldandy is sitting alone outside, watching the falling rain, with a distant and sad expression on her face. She is still thinking back on Peorth’s words to her earlier, and about “the moment” from long ago that seems to have made Peorth so cold toward her, yet Belldandy cannot seem to remember. Keiichi, Urd, and Skuld are watching her nearby, wondering what has made her so down. The two Goddess sisters begin to suspect that Keiichi has done something to her, and begin to threaten to force the truth out of him with their own individual methods (Urd with a truth serum shot, and Skuld with a bomb). Their fun of playing mental games with Keiichi is interrupted when Belldandy approaches them, and asks that Urd give her a drug to help her remember this forgotten moment that Peorth mentioned.

The four gather in Urd’s bedroom to discuss the situation further. Skuld doesn’t want Belldandy to go through with it, as she is suspicious of Urd’s medicines, but Belldandy is determined to discover the truth, and downs the pill that will supposedly help her remember. However, it seems to have no effect on her. This is rather odd, as the pill does indeed work as its supposed to, as Urd evidences by slipping Skuld a pill, causing the young Goddess to instantly burst into tears and confess all her past hidden crimes (stealing a computer motherboard, spilling tea on Keiichi’s school report…). Since there’s obviously nothing wrong with the pills, the only choice left is confront Peorth, and ask her personally.

Later that day, Peorth is walking down the halls of the house, thinking up her latest scheme of winning Keiichi’s trust. All of a sudden, she is ambushed by one of Skuld’s machines hidden on the roof above her, which drops a giant net down on her from above. Now that the Goddess is trapped, Urd approaches her, dressed in a nurse’s outfit, and armed with a truth serum needle that she plans to use on Peorth to discover the truth behind this forgotten memory from long ago. A struggle commences between the two, but this only ends up with Skuld (who is watching this from nearby) getting injected by the serum, and once again going into a tearful and dramatic confession. Peorth finally realizes that this is all because Belldandy truly has forgotten what happened between them. The time has come for the two rivals to face each other. Peorth heads straight to Belldandy’s room, and challenges her to the Triple Challenge of the Goddesses, which is to be held outside the house.

Outside the house, the two Goddesses stand before each other, while Urd and Skuld watch on the sidelines. The battle that is about to begin is an ancient traditional duel passed down among Goddesses for centuries, yet is not practiced very much today. The rules of the battle are laid down. Urd will act as judge. If Belldandy wins, Peorth will reveal the forgotten moment. If Peorth wins, Belldandy will become her servant. Belldandy agrees to Peorth’s negotiations, and the fight is on as the two Goddesses summon their angels.

The first of the three challenges begins, and we immediately see why the Goddesses don’t do this very much today. As soon as the angels are invoked, they begin tickling each other, trying to make their opponent burst out laughing. The warring Goddesses both struggle with all their might not to laugh, but Peorth is the first to lose control, and break out into hysterics. Belldandy is the victor of the first round. The time has come for the second challenge, and it involves a furious battle of “Whack-a-Mole”. Both Goddesses, armed with giant mallets, must hit tiny moles that come out of holes on the head. The one with the biggest score at the end wins. Because of Belldandy’s weakness for cute animals, she cannot find it within her heart to hit any of the moles, and Peorth easily wins the second round. With the overall score tied, the third and final challenge will determine the victor…

Urd produces a giant target dart board to appear on the ground. Belldandy and Peorth must call forth meteors to fall from space, and hit the ground, landing on the target. Each ring of the target is worth a certain amount of points. The one with the highest score wins the round, and the challenge itself. Both Goddesses summon meteors to fall from above to hit the large target. When the smoke clears, Belldandy is named the winner, as hers hit the bulls-eye. The challenge over, Peorth fulfills her promise. She summons a Vanir Bird, a mythical creature that can allow a person to view the past. The bird perches upon Belldandy’s head, and almost instantly, she is taken back in time to the forgotten memory that has caused such a great rift between Peorth and her.

During the flashback sequence, we are in Heaven. Both Belldandy and Peorth have been ordered by the Almighty to debug the sub-system of Yggdrasil. The two Goddesses are thrilled to be working together, and immediately get to work. Shortly afterward, however, something begins to go wrong. Belldandy cannot isolate the bug that is running rampant through the system, and when it merges with a virus, Peorth is invaded by it, instantly being knocked unconscious. When she comes to, Belldandy is standing over her. She was able to quarantine and erase the bug and virus. The debugging was recorded as a team effort, although Peorth did not feel she deserved any credit, since she let the virus overtake her. Peorth questioned why Belldandy had done such a thing. Had she taken pity on her? Peorth is a proud Goddess, and cannot stand to be pitied, and has hated Belldandy ever since.

Back in the present, Belldandy is relieved to finally learn the truth. She explains that it was indeed a team effort that day. The only reason why Belldandy was able to pinpoint the bug was because it had invaded Peorth’s body. If it had not been for that, she may not have been successful. Peorth finally realizes her hatred has been all a misunderstanding all these years, but this doesn’t mean things have calmed down any. There’s still the issue of granting Keiichi’s deepest desire to sort out…
