  Volume 11 Chapter 65 - SuperUrd

It’s been a few days since the incident with the evil clone infused with Urd’s Demon blood, and things have finally returned to normal, except for one tiny little detail. They now are left with the lifeless skin of the Urd clone, and have no idea what to do with it. Belldandy suddenly remembers that she needs to go shopping, and Keiichi and Skuld decide to go with her, wanting to get away from the creepy lifeless Urd skin. Urd (now back to her old self) goes off to watch TV.

As Belldandy, Keiichi, and Skuld step outside the house to leave, they run into Banpei. It seems that he wants to go along with them, but Keiichi and Skuld are against the idea, since a robot following them around out in the open would draw too much attention from others. Belldandy offers to make it up to the little robot by buying him a gift while they’re out. As they leave, Skuld looks back toward Banpei, and can’t help but wonder to herself if his emotion circuits (which were previously erased after the incident in Chapter 46) have somehow restored themselves. The young Goddess decides that she’s only imagining things, and runs off to catch up with the others.

As soon as Banpei is alone, the robot begins to wander about the outside of the house. It seems that Skuld’s hunch was correct, and his emotion circuits are indeed back on line. He wants to be with Belldandy, and will do anything it takes to help him fit in with a human crowd. As he scours the outside of the house, he comes across the lifeless skin-like Urd clone lying abandoned on the floor inside the house. The resourceful little robot gets an idea in his head, and puts the clone skin on over his metallic body, almost like a suit. With the skin on over him, he looks like a little miniature Urd, and can easily pass himself off as a child. After checking himself out in the mirror, little Banpei heads off to find Belldandy and the others.

As Banpei (disguised in the Urd skin) makes his way down the street, he comes across a teenage girl being harassed by a young man for a kiss. Banpei, being the noble little thing that he is, steps in-between the two, and sends the thug flying with a well-placed Rocket Punch attack. The teenage girl tries to thank the small stranger for its help, but Banpei only waves and walks away. The robot continues on his way, and we see a montage of sequences where he helps out others in need (helping kids crossing the street, retrieving a baby’s balloon when it starts to float away). It seems that Banpei is enjoying fitting in with the human world for the first time.

Meanwhile, we find Keiichi and Belldandy at the local marketplace street. Belldandy has found some novelty salt shakers that kind of look like Banpei, and decides to get it for him. As they shop, Keiichi can’t help but feel relieved at how peaceful things finally seem now that the whole situation with Mara and her Urd clone is over. But he figures that Skuld will show up any minute, and break this peaceful mood by ordering him to stay away from Belldandy, like she always does when they get close together. Much to his surprise, he finds Skuld standing nearby, looking off into the distance. She doesn’t even seem to notice them, and her mind seems preoccupied. Sure enough, Skuld is still thinking about Banpei’s strange behavior earlier that day.

As Keiichi stares at Skuld, he happens to see a very familiar person nearby. From behind the young Goddess, he sees what looks like a very tiny version of Urd (Banpei in disguise) go walking by. As he is looking at this strange sight, a child accidentally bumps into Belldandy, causing her to drop the salt shaker she was holding in her hand. As it drops to the ground, Banpei comes racing seemingly out of nowhere, dives, and catches it before it can shatter. Keiichi and Skuld instantly realize that this tiny Urd before them is actually Banpei in the clone skin, and are quite shocked at the little robot’s ingenuity. Of course, this only confirms Skuld’s suspicions that her creation has somehow reactivated his emotion circuits, if he’s going as far as disguising himself just to be with Belldandy. Keiichi and Belldandy are happy to hear this, but Skuld seems less than thrilled. Before she can explain her reasons for thinking this way, Banpei suddenly turns his head and looks off into the distance. It seems that his internal sensors have detected a fire emergency somewhere nearby. The disguised robot goes racing off to the scene to help, despite Skuld’s protests.

Banpei leads Keiichi and the two Goddess sisters to the scene of a giant building on fire. They overhear some fire fighters stating that all confirmed residents from the building are safely out danger. Belldandy, however, senses that there is someone else still inside. She begins to summon a rain spell to help douse the flames. As she does so, little Banpei has picked up the location of the abandoned life within in the building using his internal sensors, and runs inside to track it down. Skuld is horrified to see this, since his emotion circuits seem to be overriding his Self-Preservation Instinct that prevents him from risking his life. She cries out to Banpei, not wanting him to risk his life for others. At that very same moment, Belldandy finishes chanting her spell, which sends a sudden strong downpour of rain on the building, instantly dousing what remains of the fire.

Moments pass, and there is no sign of Banpei. Skuld is beginning to worry, until the tiny robot comes flying right out of the roof of the building. He is no longer wearing the Urd skin over his body (it must have burned off in the fire), and is holding the abandoned life from the building in his arms – a tiny kitten. Once the situation is over, Belldandy reminds Skuld that Banpei only wanted to be like everyone else and be able to help people. And the reason this is so is because he is alive, and the emotion circuits have made him this way. Skuld finally understands that Banpei’s emotions are not a technical error, but rather a miracle.

The next day, Urd is in for a surprise, when a series of gifts of thanks are delivered to her. It seems that everyone Banpei helped while disguised as her the previous day has sent gifts for her. Urd is naturally confused, and can only wonder what all the presents are for, and just what happened to her clone skin…
