Volume 11 Chapter 64 - Shadow and Light

Deep within Mara’s hideout, the Demon Urd is having a destructive fit of rage, destroying everything around her, and screaming in agony as it feels like her body is being torn apart. Mara tries to explain what is happening, but the evil clone will not listen, and instead goes flying right out of the building, destroying it in the process. As the Demon Urd flies off, she mutters to herself that she must find “her real body”…

At Keiichi’s house, Belldandy, Skuld, the Goddess Urd, and Keiichi are seated around the kitchen table, discussing the current situation. The Goddess Urd explains that the body containing her Demonic influence is a clone built by Mara, and therefore, the body is not strong enough to handle Urd’s powers. The only inevitable conclusion is that the Demon Urd will come looking for her, since she has a real body that can withstand using such intense magical power. Belldandy tries to warn the Goddess Urd what will happen if the Demon Urd loses control, but once again, she finds she cannot speak the words because of the lock placed on the information by Yggdrasil. The Goddess Urd is eventually able to figure out what Belldandy is trying to say, by making her sister nod her head “yes” or “no”, since she can’t speak about it. It seems that in time the Demon Urd will run wild and release enough energy to destroy the world. Her power will eventually become so great, her clone body will not be able to contain it, and she will self-destruct. Their only choice is to figure out a way to rejoin Urd’s Goddess and Demon sides into the same real body.

Before they can come up with any ideas, they hear the sound of someone entering through the front door and collapsing at the front step. They all go out to the hall to see who it is, only to find Mara on the floor, barely standing, and her body covered with burns and bruises from the Demon Urd’s dramatic escape earlier. She tells them that the Demon Urd has already begun to lose control, and even destroyed her hideout in the process. She holds up the device that she used to separate Urd’s Goddess and Demon essences, and pleads that they use it to rejoin the two sides into one before her creation winds up destroying itself. It seems that since the Goddess and Demon Urd are one and the same essentially, if the Demon Urd destroys herself, the Goddess Urd will not get out of this unharmed, either. When they turn to get the Goddess Urd’s opinion on what they should do, they find she has already gone off to try to stop her other self. Skuld instantly turns to Mara, and asks if she can make another clone of Urd. It seems the young Goddess has an idea…

When we rejoin the Demon Urd, we find her still flying through the skies, searching for her “real body”. She gets her wish when she finally comes across the Goddess Urd who has come to confront her. The Demon Urd flies at her Goddess self in a fit of rage, which the Goddess is able to dodge. A brief battle commences, but in the end, the Demon Urd pulls a surprise magical blast attack on the other, which sends the Goddess Urd crashing to the ground below. The evil clone soars down to finish off her real self, but the Goddess Urd is able to get out of the way just in time. It seems that the Goddess Urd is trying to make her Demon side use up all of its energy so that it will self-destruct. Is she planning to sacrifice herself to save others?

At that moment, Keiichi, Belldandy, and Skuld arrive on the scene on Keiichi’s motorcycle. They see two beams of light flying about in the sky, and know that it must be the two Urds battling it out. Up above, the Demon Urd grabs onto the hair of her other half from behind, and sends a bolt of electricity flowing throughout the Goddess’ body. This sends the Goddess Urd once again plummeting to the ground below. The Goddess Urd falls until she is suddenly caught by a magical orb of energy created by Belldandy who is watching from below. The orb carries her safely and gently down to the ground. As soon as the Goddess Urd is safe, Keiichi and Belldandy quickly grab her, and pull her aside into hiding so that Skuld can begin to set up her trap for the Demon Urd.

Once the Goddess Urd is out of the way, Skuld pulls out a bag and opens it, revealing a perfect robotic clone of the Goddess Urd that Mara and her created. When the Demon Urd sees the replica of her other self, she flies down toward it, only to discover too late that it’s not the real thing. The robot Goddess Urd’s face literally opens up, splitting in two to reveal mechanical clamps and arms that grab onto the Demon Urd, holding her in place.

Now that Urd's Demon side has been contained, it’s time to use Mara’s device to rejoin her Goddess and Demon essence into one body. Goddess Urd comes out of hiding, and is having second thoughts. After all, her Demon side tried to destroy all of them. She doesn’t know if she wants a monster like that inside her. Belldandy reminds her that the Demon Urd could have destroyed them at any time, yet she always seemed to unconsciously hold back and used her most basic attack spells on them. She pleads that her sister go through with merging her “light” and “shadow” into one form. The Goddess Urd approaches her other self, and once again, both entities that make up Urd are joined together in one real body, leaving the clone that Mara had originally created just as lifeless as it was when we first saw it back in Chapter 61
