Volume 11 Chapter 63 - The Battle For Urd

The Chapter picks up at the exact point the last left off, with Skuld and the Goddess Urd making their dramatic entrance to warn Belldandy of the evil clone. Unfortunately, Skuld finds it hard to explain the situation, since technically both Urds are a part of their sister (both her Goddess and Demonic influence that makes up Urd). Things only get worse when Keiichi steps out to see what’s going on, and sees two Urds. The Goddess Urd is finally able to explain to everyone that the other version of herself is a clone built by Mara and brought to life when she was infused with her Demon blood. Unknown to everyone, Mara and Senbei are watching this scene from a tree nearby. Mara realizes a danger of this situation that she hadn’t thought of before. With an entirely evil Urd, she has access to all of the real Urd’s heavenly power, and could use them to destroy the world if she so chose. Perhaps creating an evil clone wasn’t such a good idea after all…

Back to the action, Belldandy is trying to wrap her mind around the fact that her older sister’s “light” and “darkness” have been separated into two separate physical forms. What’s worse, the Demon Urd could use her power as much as she wanted to the point that her energy would spiral out of control, causing the Demon Urd to literally be torn apart by its own power. Belldandy tries to warn the two Urds what will happen, but finds she cannot speak. It seems that Yggdrasil has placed a program lock on Goddess/Demon Personality Separation, and so Belldandy is not even able to speak her warning.

The Demon Urd decides to use the confusion of this situation to her advantage. She removes her bracelet, which is the only difference between herself and her Goddess self, so they are now indistinguishable. After doing this, she grabs the Goddess Urd by the arm, and spins them both around in a circle to the point that they’re both dizzy. They spin around so fast, Keiichi and the others now can’t tell which is the Goddess and which is the Demon. Both claim to be the Goddess Urd, and don’t seem to be making any real progress in proving who’s telling the truth. Skuld decides to take action, by lifting up the skirt of one of the Urds, and checking her bare behind. This proves who is the Goddess and who is the Demon, as earlier, Skuld had placed a “Goddess Stamp” on the rear end of the “good” Urd. (Hey, whatever works, I guess…)

Her cover blown, the Demon Urd congratulates Skuld on her cleverness, especially for a “kid”. Skuld takes offense to the clone calling her a child, and prepares to blow her away with one of her bombs, only to be stopped by Belldandy. Although the evil Urd is a Demon, it is still part of their sister, and they must not harm it. She tries to tell Skuld that if they destroy one half of Urd, the other half will fade away, but once again, it seems that this information is protected under a lock, and Belldandy finds that she suddenly cannot speak what she wants to say.

The Demon Urd laughs over her luck now that she knows they’re not allowed to hurt her. However, she has no problems with hurting them, and calls forth a powerful lightning spell down on our heroes. Fortunately, they are protected by a magical barrier that Belldandy creates just in time. The Demon Urd knows that Belldandy can’t keep the shield spell up forever, and prepares to strike them down with another blast to weaken the barrier spell. Before she can, however, the Demon Urd is struck by an even more powerful lightning spell – this one sent to her by her Goddess half. It seems that the Goddess Urd is ready to fight her evil side, even though they are both one and the same, and if she were to defeat the Demon Urd, she would lose that side that makes up her personality forever. The Demon Urd is only all too happy to oblige to the challenge, and the two Urds begin a lightning bolt war against each other that sends the innocent onlookers nearby flying for cover.

The battle rages on, and the Demon Urd prepares to summon her most powerful spell yet. Keiichi and the others prepare for the worst, only to have the evil magic harmlessly fizzle and spit right before their eyes. The Demon Urd is naturally confused, but Belldandy realizes that the evil clone is already beginning to lose her energy. The Demon Urd begins to collapse to the ground as the strength rapidly flees from her body. At that moment, Mara comes flying out from her hiding place in the trees, and takes the Demon Urd, flying away with her. Skuld tries to stop Mara from escaping, but the Demon gets away with her clone.

After both are gone, Belldandy turns and looks at the Goddess Urd. It seems that her sister understands what happened. The Demon Urd could not endure all the power that she held, since her body is not real. It seems that this is true, for back at Mara’s hideout, the Demon watches as the clone she created lies helpless and in agonizing pain on the floor…
