Volume 5 Chapter 32 - The Third Goddess

Start of the THIRD GODDESS Arc

Urd is taking a hot, relaxing bath when a young girl suddenly emerges from the water. Urd gets angry with the girl named Skuld who immediately disappears back into the water. She emerges from a cup of tea that Keiichi has sitting there and lands on top of him. Urd follows Skuld and also appears via the tea cup filled with hot tea. She demands to know why Skuld would do this. Skuld explains that she can only transport herself through bodies of hot liquid.

As the two begin to argue, Belldandy walks in and we learn that Skuld is her younger sister. She hugs Bell and Urd asks why Skuld didn't give her a hug as well. Skuld lists all of Urd's negative attributes and Bell's positive attributes. Skuld then asks Belldandy to return home to the heavens with her. As she does, a giant, eight-legged horse named Sleipnir appears over Keiichi. Skuld puts on a pair of glasses and sees a rabbit creature with eight-legs simply known as a bug. She whacks it with a hammer (resembling a sledge hammer), killing it and causing Sleipnir to disappear back into the floor. Then Keiichi is literally flattened as another bug causes problems.

Once Keiichi is restored, Belldandy gives a long, scientific explanation of what is going on. Keiichi figures this problem could mean he could get sent anywhere when he unexpectedly disappears. Belldandy fears the worse, but he only lands in Urd's bath at her feet. The bad things happening to Keiichi are due to him getting physically close to Belldandy. She has a singularity inside of her which is attracting the bugs. As bad things continue to happen to Keiichi, the three goddesses don their glasses and whack bugs, who have been multiplying like rabbits. Skuld says they need a debugging program causing Urd to question why Skuld hasn't already done so since she is the Yggdrasil system debugger. Skuld is upset because her sisters left her alone to do everything. When Keiichi attempts to comfort her, Skuld asks him not to treat her like a kid.

Urd has had enough and launches an attack spell. The result of this is even more bugs, several of whom open a gateway beneath Keiichi to an alternate reality. Belldandy grabs him and Skuld throws down a Skuld Bomb which blows him out of the hole. Skuld then reveals she has developed a method to resolve the bug problem which oddly enough looks like a game of twister. This does cause all of the bugs in the temple to be destroyed, but with the Yggdrasil system still full of bugs, both Belldandy and Urd will need to return to fix things. Urd is ticked by this and launches an attack at Skuld who counters with a Skuld Bomb. The bugs immediately re-appear having created backups of themselves and causing the goddesses to have to start over from scratch.

The Third Goddess arc (v05c032 to c033) as the name implies introduces the third goddess, Skuld. It is already evident in Skuld's debut chapter that the oldest and youngest of the Norns do not get along very well - a theme that recurs throughout pretty much the entire manga storyline.

Chapter 32 introduces a lot of fundamental concepts pertaining to Skuld. These include 1) Skuld is a genius at inventions 2) Belldandy is for all purposes Skuld's idol and model sister 3) Skuld is Yggdrasil's debugger, as shown by her debugging hammer 4) Skuld's special transport medium is water (note: the condition for the water to be hot disappears later on). Note that all these concepts were also shown clearly in the OAV.
