Skuld's Personality 2 / 2

If Urd is the love goddess, bent on bringing Belldandy and Keiichi closer together, then Skuld is the opposite. Skuld has always been closer to Belldandy and always looks up to her. Unfortunately for Keiichi, she is much too protective of Bell. She interprets Keiichi's mostly innocous attempts to get closer to Bell as threats, and intervenes - mostly scolding and shouting "pervert," although she has been known to give a good whack with her hammer.

Skuld's development is interesting in the sense that it provides us with something the others cannot provide - a glimpse of how a goddess grows. Unlike the other (adult) goddesses, Skuld's developmental milestones are more easily discerned in actual chapters. The first signifcant one is probably Chapter 51 (You're So Bad), where we see a completely different Skuld: moody, staring off into space, and of all things, apparently in love with Keiichi. As it turned out, she was only experiencing these mood swings as a result of the growth of her powers.

Most of her development though occurs much later, in the arc appropriately named Childhood's End (Chapter 73 and 74). In this arc Belldandy tries to teach Skuld how to ride a bike. It seems so simple and yet it taught Skuld how to overcome her major weakness, namely her overdependence on other people and machines. In the process Skuld meets Sentarou who teaches her yet another thing: how it feels to fall in love. Other chapters worth mentioning would be 79 (Pretty in Scarlet) and the Banpei/Sigel chapters. In these are small learning experiences, like how it is to have an angel or how it is to realize that an invention can also fall in love. (Note: both Chapter 51 and the Childhood's End arc also tackle Skuld's growth in power).

As with Urd, Skuld becomes somewhat more subdued in the later chapters. She becomes a bit less meddlesome into Bell and Keiichi's relationship, maybe having gained a greater understanding through her own romantic experiences. Even her fights with Urd decrease. Skuld's youth might seem like a disadvantage, yet it gives her a distinct advantage - the potential of changing into much more than she is now. Given Skuld's recent ability to control an angel, Skuld might become one of most interesting characters in the series.
