Midsummer Night's Dream
: OAV Episode 2

It has been five months since Belldandy arrived. The episode opens with what appears to be a typical routine; Belldandy cooking and Keiichi studying. Megumi drops by for lunch and hands her brother an unmarked parcel. She inquires about Keiichi's plans for the summer but Keiichi explains that he has no money. Megumi suggests going to the ocean but seeing the look on Keiichi's face remembers that her brother  can't swim.  During  conversation after the meal, Megumi mentions that she has been to the ocean twice. Belldandy thinks this is wonderful, for she has never be to the ocean. Megumi helps Belldandy with the dishes and suggests that Bell ask Keiichi to take her to the ocean. Meanwhile Keiichi is considering the idea and with daydreams of a romantic summer and getting at least a kiss in mind, decides to go for it.

Material for this scene was taken from Chapter 11. However Megumi suggests going to a seaside park instead of the ocean.

With Megumi having left and Belldandy gone shopping, Keiichi opens the unmarked parcel. It contains a Betamax tape with the risqué title - "Goddess Films: Sexy Dynamite!! Part 2," making him assume it was sent by his sempai. Keiichi plays the tape which shows a dark-skinned woman in a sexy pose. Fascinated Keiichi draws near the screen until a foot begins to stick out from the TV set itself and kicks his face! The  woman  pulls  herself  out of  the TV screen and congratulates a flustered Keiichi for finally making a move on Belldandy. Confused, Keiichi asks who she is and the dark-skinned woman replies that she is the Cupid of Love. The woman draws near and gives advice on what Keiichi should do in a literal hands-on manner. Keiichi scoots away and asks who the heck she is and why she knew so much about them. Belldandy comes back and cuts their conversation short, but not before telling Keiichi that she's Bell's older sister, Urd.

Urd's appearance in the OAV is nearly identical to that of the manga in Chapter 14. However the package arrives by mail and Urd knocks out Keiichi accidentally upon coming out of the TV. The scene where Urd places Keiichi's hand on her breast and has some parallel in the said chapter. Here Urd actually tries to seduce Keiichi under the pretense of recharging Belldandy's "System Force."

The couple finally make it to the seaside and Belldandy finds it wonderful. She asks if Keiichi wants to go to the beach and he agrees. Sitting on the beach, Keiichi is thinking of holding hands with Belldandy. Suddenly hands from behind cover Keiichi's eyes and a woman's chest is pressed flat against his back. Turning to who he presumed as Belldandy, he finds Urd, who claims to be there to help him. She offers a bottle of sunscreen oil, which she assures will make Belldandy, in Urd's word's "all mellow mellow" (and prompts another one of Keiichi's fantasies). Belldandy arrives and agrees but before Keiichi can put the sunscreen on with his shaking hands, Mishima Sayoko greets him. Startled, Keiichi throws the bottle in the sand. Sayoko finds it a coincidence to bump into him and with a girl and jokes about him being a stud. Belldandy introduces herself and Sayoko quickly assesses her as a rival not to be taken lightly. Toshiyuki Aoshima (Sayoko's cousin) invites Belldandy to a boat ride and takes  her by the hand. Keiichi  moves  quickly to separate them as the Ultimate Force might wreak havoc but no such thing happens. Sayoko's group leaves and Keiichi wonders what's wrong with the Ultimate Force. Belldandy thinks it might be a system malfunction and offers to check it out later. Keiichi wants to pick up where they were interrupted but unfortunately Urd's sunscreen has all spilled in the sand. From afar a frustrated Urd thinks it was close and decides that a new plan is needed.

Putting Urd's new plan into motion, the couple go far offshore in a rubber boat. Keiichi inquires about the Ultimate Force again and Belldandy explains that she tried to make contract with her older sister Urd who was in charge of system maintainance. Unfortunately she was not around. Belldandy offers to row with Keiichi but as she stands up the  waves  begin to rock the boat. Keiichi stands upto assist her but the waves knock them down. Keiichi realizes that he's holding Belldandy and begins to make a move. Back on the shore,Urd snaps her fingers (glowing with power) and considers her plan a success. However luck is not on Keiichi's side as Sayoko's yacht passes close by and throw the couple into the water. Sayoko apologizes for the accident and asks about Keiichi. Belldandy realizes that he can't swim and she dives to save K1 who has been sinking to the depths of the ocean.

The OAV departs significantly from the manga with regard to the couple's ocean adventure. In Chapter 11 the two go to a seaside park where they eat ice cream, ride a boat and end up at a park bench. However Episode 2 and this chapter are similar in that Keiichi ends up getting a real kiss. Incidentally, the events in the manga preceding the kiss (in which Keiichi steps on a soda can and nearly falls into a waterway) is shown in the opening trailer of the series.

With the sun sinking, Belldandy sits by Keiichi sleeping in their rented room. Belldandy apologizes and recalls the previous events. Slapped by Sayoko in the cheek, Belldandy gets scolded for bringing Keiichi so far out in the sea when she knew he couldn't swim. Sayoko criticizes her for being immature and suggests that Keiichi might consider her a bother. With seeds of doubt planted in her heart, Belldandy thinks that she might not be good for Keiichi.  Keiichi wakes up and asks why Bell is crying. She apologizes and seems to mention that her presence might not be good for him. However she's too scared to asked what Keiichi thought of her and leaves on the excuse to get some ice. Keiichi is confused why Belldandy was crying and wonders if he's the reason. Urd's voice suddenly chimes in and she transforms from chibi to adult form in in a cloud of smoke. She berates Keiich for making her younger sister cry and warns him not to come crying to her if Belldandy decides to go back to the heavens. This catches Keiichi's attention and Urd points out that his problem is that he does not love Belldandy enough. Keiichi has to tell Belldandy that he loves her and so that he won't mess up Urd gives him a potion to increase his courage a hundredfold. Keiichi drinks the potion and faints. The power of the potion was that upon waking up, the first person Keiichi saw would become his true love.

Meanwhile, Sayoko thinks the incident was partly her fault too and decides to apologize. She knocks at the door and falls in as Keiichi opens it abruptly. Keiichi stares at Sayoko and his eyes glaze over as the potion kicks in. Words of adoration begin to gush out of Keiichi as he goes for a kiss. In his mind Keiichi calls out to Urd to help him as Belldandy might see him.  He tries to fight the potion but it's too strong.  Sayoko  pushes  Keiichi  back and asks about Belldandy but Keiichi replies that he wants to be with her, not Bell. With a clatter a bowl falls to the ground as Keiichi's fears come true - Belldandy is standing by the hallway. Sayoko tries to explain but Belldandy does not wish to hear the explanation for now. Suddenly Keiichi grabs his head and shouts as if in pain as he runs out of the resort.

It's already evening when Belldandy manages to catch up with Keiichi at the rocks by the seashore. Bell tells Keiichi that if he thinks she's a bother she'll just go back home. Keiichi loses consciousness and Urd's potion ampule falls out of his hand. Belldandy calls out for Urd to show herself and demands that she return him to normal. Urd refuses and says that Keiichi is a shameful fool. Bell takes offense and fires an energy ball at her sister, destroying the rock she was standing on. Urd explains that she didn't anticipate the situation and that there was no cure. Belldandy begs the unconscious Keiichi to return back to normal, saying that she was willing to lose her divine just to bring him back. Belldandy kisses Keiichi and he wakes up, back to the way he was before. Belldandy asks Keiichi if after all that has happened, he thought she was a bother. Keiichi reassures her that this wasn't true and that these incidents were nothing compared in view of the fortune that brought a goddess to him. The two embrace for a long time and Urd thinks that her work is done here. However black clouds begin to swirl and a lightning bolt strikes the Goddess. Rushing over, Keiichi and Belldandy find Urd knocked out and a message inscribed on the ground. The crash of the Ultimate Force system was due to Urd's tampering and until further notice she was forbidden to return home. With a sigh of dismay Keiichi realizes that his chance to be alone with Belldandy is gone. Belldandy apologizes but Keiichi says it's ok - with two goddesses at home, he'll be twice as happy.

Practically all the rest of the events in Episode 2 are original material. In the manga Sayoko makes her first appearance in Chapter 4 and meets Belldandy at the NIT campus. At this time she already considers Bell a rival and attempts to steal Keiichi through various means. Aoshima makes his first appearance much later in Chapter 20 and as in the OAV, was also interested in Belldandy. The use of a love potion by Urd is not surprising since she uses these many times in the early manga stories. The lightning bolt that struck Urd in the end (and her subsequent exile on Earth) is lifted directly from Chapter 14. In both the manga and anime the reason given was Urd's tampering which resulted in failure of the Ultimate Force system. The title of the OAV is obviously from one of William Shakespeare's plays, A Midsummer Night's Dream.
